Helen is a 2011 Tamil crime thriller film written, directed and produced by Mani Ratnam and co-produced by Svati Marimuthu (of National Film Corporation). The film stars model and actress Isabelle Adjani, Saipin Chatha, Jimmy Shergill, Martin Henderson and Manisha Koirala in the lead roles. The movie was released on 11 November 2011 in India. The film is based on the true story of Helen Keller. The film was scheduled to be released theatrically in North America by Lions Gate Entertainment on 14 or 21 January 2012, but was dropped by the studio. The U.S rights were then acquired by Breaking Glass Pictures, who released it there on DVD and Blu-ray in 2012. The movie was critically acclaimed upon release and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil at the 59th National Film Awards. It also won three Filmfare Awards South including the award for Best Tamil Film (Critics) (tied with "5 Sundarikal"). The movie is produced by Mani Ratnam under his home production studio Madras Talkies in association with S.V.M. Pictures in collaboration with Annapurna Studios in the United States, the film has Manisha Koirala who plays dual roles of Helen Keller and Mahamaya in large portions of the film. The film was shot throughout India and at Thodari and Ahmedabad studios in Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai and Chennai. Helen is based on real-life American woman Helen Keller (1880 – 1968), who was also a great philosopher, lecturer and activist for women's rights, deafblindness and other disabilities. The film's title is based on her last name. The movie is told from the point of view of Mahamaya (Manisha Koirala) who has been raised hearing-impaired in the Indian mental home by Doctor Gopal Danarasu. Mahamaya falls in love with Danarasu's manager Sumitra (Manisha Koirala) who loses her husband. Danarasu uses her beauty to win money from Mahamaya's family, but hides the truth about her being deafblind, so it would be easier for them to accept their daughter being in an institution since she couldn't have children. cfa1e77820
